Exciting and colourful, charming and chaotic, a tour to India promises to be an all-out assault on the senses! And with world-famous landmarks, magnificent wildlife, idyllic scenery and fascinating cultures lining up to be discovered, it’s easy to see why so many solo travellers are adding it to their list of must-visit destinations.

Delhi’s impressive landmarks

A good place to start is in the north, in particular India’s capital, New Delhi, designed by British architects Sir Edwin Lutyens and Sir Herbert Baker. On Just You tour ‘An Invitation to India’, you’ll walk along Lutyens’ elegant boulevard the Rajpath, or King’s Way. As you go, pause at some of the city’s most impressive landmarks, all perfectly planned to give optimum viewing pleasure to those in the Viceroy’s Palace. At one end, the colossal 42-metre-high India Gate archway proudly stands in memory of thousands of fallen Indian soldiers. Walk further and you’ll see where parliament meets in the impressive Sansad Bhavan, a circular, colonnaded building.

Old Delhi rickshaw ride

In complete contrast, the 17th century walled city of Old Delhi is a dizzying maze of narrow streets, intriguing alleyways and hectic bazaars simply calling out for exploration. Avoid the crowds by climbing aboard a cycle rickshaw and relaxing as the sights, including the red-sandstone Jama Masjid Mosque and Raj Ghat, a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi, pass by.

Golden Triangle highlights

Delhi is just one stop on the popular Golden Triangle route, and this tour follows this well-trodden path. So, what are the highlights of the Golden Triangle? After Delhi, two more fascinating cities make up this trio of hot spots, and they’re crammed with architectural and historic wonders. To the east is Agra, where the UNESCO-listed Agra Fort was once the imperial city of the Mogul rulers. It’s in this mighty fortress, built to instil fear into the hearts of would-be invaders, that the Emperor Shah Jahan was imprisoned when power was seized by his son.

The Taj Mahal at sunrise

You’ll learn much more about this fascinating story at the incredible Taj Mahal – the centrepiece not only of the Golden Triangle but one of the most famous buildings in the world. This shimmering white-marble masterpiece was built as a memorial to the Emperor’s beloved wife, Mumtaz. Their love story has enthralled the world for centuries – and the beauty of this mausoleum cannot be overstated. To visit the Taj Mahal as the sun rises and the marble walls inlaid with semiprecious stones shimmer and sparkle, is one of the great travel experiences.

India’s royal palaces

Next stop is Udaipur, a city known for its lavish royal residences, and you’ll actually stay in one of them. The Taj Lake Palace – built in 1746 and set in the middle of Lake Pichola – is your home for two nights. This is followed by a stay at the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur. Showcasing the heritage of Rajasthan, this was once home to the Jodhpur royal family – that’s surely something to boast about to the folks back home!

The Maharajas’ Express train

Travelling by train is a quintessential Indian experience, and the country’s rail network is impressive, boasting more than 7,000 railway stations. However, for a truly special journey, choose one of India’s best trains, the incomparable Maharajas’ Express. If you do, on our ‘The Maharajas’ Express & Palace of India’ tour, you’ll be following in the footsteps of royalty as you surround yourself in pure luxury. Its route takes you to the Golden Triangle cities, and then to Ranthambore National Park, where you can head off on safari in search of tigers.

Pink City of Jaipur

If you’ve ever wondered why Jaipur is called the ‘pink city’, the answer lies within its Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. Painted a powder-pink shade by Maharaja’s order to impress Great Britain’s Prince Albert when he visited in 1876, the colour is still required by law today. Another amazing sight is the five-storey Palace of the Winds, where through the more than 900 small windows, the ladies of the court would peer unseen at ordinary life in the bustling streets below.

Kerala’s backwaters

Heading to southern India, a tour of Kerala will introduce you to a tropical paradise. It’s your gateway also to India’s famous, and aromatic, spice plantations as well as beautiful beaches and the famous backwaters. The best way to explore this tranquil palm-fringed network of canals, lakes and lagoons, known as the ‘Venice of the East’, is by traditional houseboat. These former rice boats have been converted to carry passengers on a relaxing journey through the very heart of this must-visit destination. After this, give into the lure of Kovalam’s fabulous beaches, the perfect place to enjoy some rest and relaxation and soak up the sun.

Tour of Sri Lanka

The beach might also be a draw to those of you looking for a tour of Sri Lanka. Although there is so much more to this teardrop-shaped island floating in the Indian Ocean at the tip of southern India. It is famous for its rolling tea and spice plantations, and national parks which are home to elephants, leopards, many species of exotic birds and more. Catch sight of traditional fishermen balanced on wooden stilts at the edge of the ocean, watch water buffalo working the fields and visit a turtle hatchery to see these endangered creatures as they are released into the wild. For such a small place, it packs a punch when it comes to history too, with eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites scattered amongst its stunning landscape.

Temples of Sri Lanka

So, what are the highlights in Sri Lanka? The ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya is a dramatic sight, built atop a massive rock. The entrance to the original fortress was via the mouth of a carved lion, and a series of galleries and staircases allow access now. Although time has taken its toll on the structure, the lion’s enormous paws as still there for all to see. One of Sri Lanka’s oldest temples is the Dambulla cave temple, where more than 150 images of Buddha are displayed, and be sure to visit Kandy, the last royal capital of Sri Lanka. Here you’ll find the golden-roofed Temple of the Sacred Tooth, which houses the relic of the tooth of Buddha.

A tour of Nepal

For a massive adventure and the chance to explore the ultimate great outdoors, a tour of Nepal must go to the top of your list. This is home to the highest peak on Earth – Mount Everest – and the chance to take in sweeping views of the Himalayas is simply incredible. You really won’t believe your eyes!

Spiritual side of Nepal

If you long to feed your spiritual side, there are many sacred sites in this predominantly Hindu kingdom known for its religious tolerance and harmony. The Boudhanath Stupa is the holiest site for Tibetan Buddhists outside Tibet, and City of Devotees Bhaktapur, in Kathmandu Valley, is celebrated for its towering temples. A living representation of the valley during the medieval period, this is a snapshot on real Nepali life that no guidebook could describe.
